I just returned from a recent stay at the Bitter End Yacht Club, and want to tell you about my amazing snorkeling adventure. It was a 2.5 hr snorkeling excursion to “3 great snorkel spots”. We went aboard the pontoon boat “Ponce de Leon”. Our skipper “Kento” led us to our first stop which was not far from the bitter end. Although I have snorkeled many times before in some of the best snorkel spots in Hawaii, my first dunk underwater was a pleasing surprise. SO MUCH CORAL! And, so many different varieties! Lots of purple fan coral, giant yellow brain coral, staghorn coral, pillar coral, elkhorn coral—just to name a few. So much color, everywhere! Feeling very relaxed, I just floated and enjoyed the scenery.
Our second stop, right off Necker Island, was even better. Before getting into the water I noticed a small flock of pink flamingos flying overhead. Im informed that there is a wild population of these birds living on Necker Island. Wow! I didn’t even know pink flamingos existed outside the zoo. Once in the water I saw the biggest brain coral EVER! Is that a boulder Im seeing, or coral? And, look at all the pretty little reef fish? The tiny black boxed shaped one with the bright blue and purple spots was particularly intriguing.
Kento must have saved the best spot for last- “honeymoon beach”. We snorkeled alongside an amazing rocky beach front. Then, feeling kinda tired, I rolled up onto this romantic little beach and lay in the sand for awhile soaking up the sun. I noticed a little trail made of stone steps that goes up the side of the rocky beach edge. Okay, so now Im taking a little hike. Where else can you snorkel, swim, bird-watch, sunbathe, and hike all in a 1 hour period? Bitter End!
Satisfied I swim back to the Ponce de Leon where Kento is waiting to help me into the boat with one hand, and presenting me with a rum punch in the other. I like this guy. And I like this trip!
